Integrated Product Cost Planning across SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and SAP Analytics Cloud

With Integrated Financial Planning, SAP delivers content in SAP Analytics Cloud for financial planning and budgeting. This content comes with prepared integration between SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and SAP Analytics Cloud where in the following a closer look is taken at the cost estimate integration from SAP S/4 HANA Cloud Public Edition to SAP Analytics Cloud.

Basis of this integration is the cost estimate calculation in SAP S/4 HANA Cloud Public Edition which is used in Integrated Financial Planning process “Product Cost Planning” to define standard costs for finished goods. These standards costs are then used in Integrated Financial Planning in the profitability and P&L planning.

Cost Estimate in SAP S/4 HANA Cloud Public Edition Product Cost Planning

In Product Cost Planning as part of SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, cost estimates are used to estimate the cost of produced goods and services. The cost estimate calculation for a given product requires to maintain the manufacturing related components and quantities (bill of material in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition) as well as the work centers and work center activity consumptions process (routing in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition). Cost estimate calculations are heavily used in the manufacturing industry.

For Integrated Financial Planning, the previously calculated cost estimates from Product Cost Planning in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition are read and a complex and resource-intensive explosion process takes place at this step. This is an iterative process that goes through different cost estimates to determine for products via semi-finished products the raw materials and the quantities as well as the activities and activity consumption. Furthermore, it skips cost estimate calculations for raw materials, the identified cost estimates are split according to a cost of goods manufactured typical component breakdown like raw materials, activities, etc. and further applied settings that are all defined as filters. Finally, it is ensured that according to the filter settings for each product the most current cost estimate is considered.

New API Service to optimize the resource-intensive cost estimate reading process

With the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 2408, SAP optimized this resource-intensive integration as part of a new API service by introducing buffer tables when reading cost estimates from Product Cost Planning in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition.

These buffer tables are optimized for the integration with SAP Analytics Cloud and where the results from the cost estimate reading process are stored (after the previously mentioned algorithm and transformation). This also means that the new API service is no longer directly based on the Product Cost Planning in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, but rather accesses the provided itemization in the previously explained buffer.

Therefore, the new integration includes two new apps to fill the buffer with cost estimate results. More precisely, with the first app cost-estimate-related filter settings along with configuration IDs are defined for the cost estimate reading and transformation process and then used in the second app to run preparation jobs where the actual process is executed, and the buffer is filled accordingly.

Using the new API service at the begin of this article, for the integration the buffered results (also referred to as itemization) are then read into SAP Analytics Cloud using the previously defined configuration ID.

The new API service still serves primarily to support product cost planning in Integrated Financial Planning, but due to its flexibility, other planning use cases in SAP Analytics Cloud are now also possible.

Further solution details, the comparison of the old and new API service and the interaction with the product cost planning in SAP Analytics Cloud is depicted in the following figure:
