How to rename a hostname (network name) in a SAP cluster group?

This blog explains how to rename a cluster network name resource in a Windows Failover cluster running SAP NetWeaver or S/4 based applications. The rename of a “virtual” hostname used by SAP applications (that’s SAPLOCALHOST and SAPGLOBALHOST hostnames) is a manual procedure which is described here in detail for the File-Share-Cluster (FSC) and the Shared-Disk-Cluster (SDC) variants.

There are two scenarios when a rename of a cluster network name resource is required:

The SAPLOCALHOST or SAPGLOBALHOST hostnames must be changed in an already existing, productive clustered SAP system. You created a “clone” of a productive clustered SAP system and want to switch during a short downtime from the productive used system to the “clone”.
