SAP and DataRobot Partnership Updates 2024

Estimated read time 10 min read

Since the announcement of last year’s partnership between SAP and DataRobot at Data Unleashed 2023, there have been some new changes and announcements around this partnership. In this blog post, we will cover the fundamentals on SAP Datasphere and the unique value of the partnership with DataRobot. Then, we will look at the updated Solution Architecture, the latest milestones of this partnership and where we stand today.

SAP Datasphere

SAP Datasphere makes up the core of SAP’s Unified Data & Analytics portfolio and enables users to create business data fabrics. Through simplifying data landscapes, harmonizing and delivering mission-critical data across systems while maintaining the data’s valuable context, customers can unleash the power of data to achieve faster and better decision-making.

In 2023 SAP announced its partnership with an open data ecosystem of leading technology vendors to provide a tailored integration between SAP Datasphere and their solutions. Through this, organizations can manage their data by making it easier to organize, secure, and control. Figure 1 shows SAP Datasphere’s core capabilities and a list of open data ecosystem partners.

SAP Datasphere includes embedded machine learning and advanced analytics features that help customers condense their data into actionable insights for decision-making. Without needing to move data, customers can use SAP HANA Cloud’s data science capabilities to train ML models and store predictions directly within SAP Datasphere. The figure below illustrates how these machine learning and advanced analytics features are integrated into SAP Datasphere.

In addition to the existing embedded capabilities, SAP has partnered with DataRobot to further accelerate insights and create AI solutions tailored to specific business challenges.

Partnership with DataRobot

SAP Datasphere and DataRobot partner together to offer customers a seamless way to leverage unified SAP business data fabrics for accelerated AI-driven application development. SAP Datasphere provides a unified business data platform, while DataRobot enables the creation of tailored AI solutions using that same business data fabric. This integration allows businesses to incorporate AI models built in Data Robot into SAP business processes and applications, delivering powerful, AI-driven insights. The collaboration bridges the gap between data science, analytics, and business users, driving more effective business outcomes.

DataRobot is a comprehensive enterprise AI platform designed to build, operate and govern predictive and generative AI solutions, streamlining the ML process, and helping organizations extract value from their data. It offers end-to-end capabilities for both no-code and code-first users, allowing them to quickly create advanced AI models, facilitate smoother collaboration between teams, and monitor models in production. DataRobot supports diverse data types, including text, geospatial, and image data, and provides advanced algorithms for business challenges like classification, regression, clustering, anomaly detection, and time series forecasting. DataRobot provides a full life cycle development and management suite for generative AI solutions, allowing users to safely and efficiently build generative AI applications. Additionally, DataRobot was ranked number one in governance for predictive and generative AI by Gartner in 2024, offering explainability for AI features, end-to-end governance and monitoring, and best-in-class ML Ops and LLM Ops tools for production applications, helping businesses optimize their AI in real time.

Figure 4: Updated Solution Architecture

The SAP and DataRobot partnership combines SAP’s business expertise with DataRobot’s AI-driven insights to improve organizational decision-making and operational efficiency. This collaboration supports a range of business use cases that can significantly enhance processes. Examples include revenue forecasting for better financial planning, predictive maintenance to anticipate equipment failures, demand forecasting using historical SAP sales data, customer churn prediction, fraud detection, supply chain optimization through accurate forecasting, and overall revenue optimization.

Roadmap Overview

As shown in Figure 4, the integration between SAP and DataRobot has significantly evolved since its announcement in March 2023. Initially, a JDBC connection was used to access SAP Datasphere data for modeling tasks, and AI model deployment to SAP AI Core required a Python script. Now, DataRobot can integrate with SAP BTP through various integration points and offers specialized connectors, including SAP HANA JDBC and SAP Datasphere connectors, improving read/write time, credential management and SAP Space management. Additionally, the new 1-click deployment to AI Core feature enables users to easily deploy AI models from DataRobot with a fully automated process, simplifying the deployment workflow and enabling full DataRobot ML Ops capabilities for models served in AI Core.

Figure 5: SAP and DataRobot Partnership RoadmapIn our next blog, we will demonstrate how businesses can integrate enterprise data with cutting-edge AI through the SAP and DataRobot partnership to create scalable value. In a step-by-step Walkthrough we will focus on how this collaboration addresses a key challenge for retail companies: accurately managing inventory to prevent stockouts. For large retailers, balancing scale with SKU-level precision is essential to ensure products are always available. The use case will illustrate how SAP Datasphere and DataRobot empower businesses to fully leverage their data, handling both scale and detail to solve complex challenges.
