Running a Focused and Targeted Testing Process

In the world of software development, ensuring that your testing process remains focused and targeted is essential. Unnecessary information like test cases, which are not meant to be tested, shown to the tester can irritate and probably delay the execution. This blog post discusses the new functionality to reduce the test case list in the Test Execution app to only show test cases, which are related to an active test plan.

With this, we build on the already available functionality of using test plans for an advanced test orchestration, which is perfectly described in the related blog post Advanced Test Orchestration and Tester assignment using Test Plans in SAP Cloud ALM. Don’t miss reading it beforehand.

Introducing the “Test Plan Status” Filter

To help testers focus on test cases linked to an active test plan, a new filter, “Test Plan Status,” has been added to the Test Execution app. By default, this filter is set to “In Testing,” which does exclude all test cases from the execution list, which are not assigned to a test plan, or which are assigned to a finished test plan.

Along with the new filter, we have moved the “(None)” option in the Test Plan filter to the last position to ensure that customers who exclusively work with Test Plans are not inconvenienced by this entry.

How to Use the “Test Plan Status” Filter in Cloud ALM

For those utilizing Cloud ALM for test management, especially if you’re managing test cases only with structured test plans, this feature can be particularly useful. Here’s how you can make the most of it:

Default Filter Setting: By default, the “Test Plan Status” filter is set to “In Testing.” This configuration ensures that testers focus on the cases that require attention without getting sidetracked by those not in progress or which are not associated to a test plan.

Customizing the Filter: If your workflow doesn’t include a formal test plan or if you want a view of all test cases, you can modify the filter. Simply remove the default filter or set it additionally to “(None)” to include all test cases, even those outside the designated test plans.

Saving Your Preferences: Once you adjust the filter settings to your needs, you can save these as a personal view. This setup allows for a customized testing view that aligns with your specific testing requirements and preferences. You can set them also as Default view, which allows a direct filtering for your preferences whenever entering the Test Execution app.

Conclusion

A focused testing process can make all the difference in delivering reliable, high-quality software. By leveraging the possibilities of the new “Test Plan Status” filter in Cloud ALM, testers can streamline their efforts and maintain a targeted approach.
