Important aspects on SAP Activate for Transition to SAP Cloud ALM

Estimated read time 9 min read

In following up to the previously-published blogs on SAP Activate for Transition to SAP Cloud ALM – [New Roadmap Announcement: SAP Activate for Transition to SAP Cloud ALM] and [How to Begin an SAP Activate for Transition to SAP Cloud ALM Project], I will now take a deeper dive into key aspects of this roadmap for Application Lifecycle Management (ALM). Before you immerse yourself in the SAP Activate Roadmap, here are some valuable insights on the following topics:

Let’s dive in and help you make the most of your SAP Cloud ALM transition journey!

1. Using pre-defined Tags
In the Discovery phase of the SAP Activate Roadmap for Transition to SAP Cloud ALM, it’s anticipated that transitioning from SAP Solution Manager to SAP Cloud ALM may involve diverse project types. This means that some tasks and deliverables in the subsequent phases might be relevant only for specific project types, while they might be irrelevant for others. These tasks can be identified via the predefined tags “SAP Cloud ALM for Implementation” and “SAP Cloud ALM for Operations.” These tags facilitate efficient filtering in the Roadmap Viewer’s side panel, ensuring a more streamlined overview based on project-specific relevance.

Moreover, if you’re utilizing SAP Cloud ALM in your transition project, you have the option to easily omit tasks that do not pertain to your project scope in the ‘Tasks’ app of SAP Cloud ALM. In the app, you can activate the “Tags” filter and select the project type (with tag) that is not relevant to your project.

A mass edit feature allows you to select all filtered tasks and set their status to “Not Relevant,” providing a more concentrated view of only the tasks that matter most to your transition process.

2. Project Management
Similar to other Activate Roadmaps, the ‘Project Management’ workstream extends from the Prepare to Run phase. It’s crucial to recognize that the deliverables and tasks within this workstream are generally adapted from other Roadmaps (with minor adoptions), making them somewhat generic. When reviewing these tasks, keep in mind their origin and the fact that implementing a SAP business solution is typically a more significant undertaking with broader implications compared to an ALM project.

Given this, it’s essential to tailor and adjust the tasks according to the size and impact of your ALM transition project. Additionally, consider your organization’s or customer’s specific policies, compliance requirements, and best practices for project management. By doing so, you’ll ensure that the project management strategy aligns seamlessly with your unique needs and objectives.

3. Test Planning/Test Strategy
Also, in this Roadmap there are deliverables for Test Management (workstream “Testing”). This starts with the creation of a Test Strategy in the Prepare phase, goes through test planning, and finally test execution in the Realize phase.

It is important to understand that you don’t need to test the standard functionality of SAP Cloud ALM. The testing in the project should focus on acceptance testing by the ALM community and testing of integrations or extensions built during the project.

4. Fit-to-Standard / Operations Design Analysis
Like for SAP S/4HANA the Activate Roadmap for SAP Cloud ALM does describe a fit to standard approach for the SAP Cloud ALM for Implementation processes. (See also Best Practices for SAP Cloud ALM for Implementation – SAP Community for more information of best practices for SAP Cloud ALM) )When checking these tasks please keep in mind their origin from the ERP world. Depending on the scope of the ALM processes to be implemented the effort might be smaller, but there is the need to thoroughly define to-be ALM processes along the SAP best practices.

There are no best practice processes for SAP Cloud ALM for Operations available. Nevertheless, if SAP Cloud ALM for Operations is part of your transition project there will be the need to design how the operations capabilities of SAP Cloud ALM should be integrated in your operations processes and tooling. This activity is covered in the deliverables of “Operations Design Analysis”.

5. Sprint Planning and Execution
In the Realize phase you will find the deliverable “Sprint planning and execution”. I would like to highlight that depending on the project scope these might be very small tasks. For example, if SAP Cloud ALM is implemented for SAP S/4HANA project w/o any integrations, there is hardly any sprint planning to do. If the project includes several integrations and extensions a Sprint Planning and Execution makes a lot of sense.

In conclusion, I’ve shared some key aspects of the SAP Activate Roadmap for Transition to SAP Cloud ALM that I wanted to highlight. I hope you find this information beneficial when using the SAP Activate Roadmap for your transition journey.
