​ Microplastics have been on the tip of peoples’ tongues for a few years now—as have literal microplastics. As technology has advanced, scientists are realizing that the contamination is far more prevalent than we thought.

Microplastics have been found all over our bodies, from saliva to lungs to reproductive organs and even in the brain. Though research is still in its early years, scientists have potentially linked microplastics to ailments such as inflammatory bowel disease, immune cell death and more.

But solutions are being explored—like fungi that break down plastic—by brilliant minds all around the globe.
