After an agonisingly long wait, the new Shimano XTR M9200 groupset has finally arrived! Today the Japanese component behemoth is launching two new disc brakes, two sets of carbon wheels, and an electronic drivetrain that’s built around a wireless shifter and derailleur. Yes the derailleur is still designed to bolt onto a hanger, but Shimano insists there are very good reasons for its decision.
Mountain bikers familiar with their XTR history will recall that it was seven years ago when the last generation M9100 groupset was introduced. During that time SRAM launched its first generation Eagle AXS wireless drivetrain in 2019, which was followed by the disruptive Transmission in 2023. Fast-forward to today and SRAM now boasts five wireless and two mechanical Transmission groupsets. To say Shimano has some catching up to do would be the understatement of the decade.
Of course, the Japanese brand is notorious for not rushing things, favouring a slow and steady approach that focuses on refinement over pushing the innovation envelope. Still, there’s no denying that Shimano has increasingly been left behind in the premium MTB market.
So, has XTR Di2 been worth the wait? What does it offer over its mechanical counterpart, and how does it compare to SRAM Transmission? We’ve been testing two XTR groupsets over the past seven months to see if Shimano is ready to fight back!
