This two-part blog series explores how SAP SuccessFactors Mobile introduced SAP Joule – SAP’s AI copilot – into the hands of mobile users. Part one introduces the opportunity, motivation, and foundational changes that made this integration possible. Part two explores the architectural evolution and how SAP Mobile Services enabled the delivery of this new experience.
SAP SuccessFactors is a market-leading Human Capital Management (HCM) solution, trusted by over 9,900 organizations and more than 260 million users globally. Designed to help organizations attract, develop, and retain their workforce, SAP SuccessFactors offers a comprehensive suite of tools to manage the entire employee lifecycle.
Complementing the web experience, SAP SuccessFactors Mobile brings HR closer to employees – driving higher engagement, productivity, and informed decision-making. It delivers a native, consumer-grade experience while meeting strict enterprise-grade security standards. With performance and usability at its core, the app is tailored to meet the demands of modern mobile users.
SAP Joule is an AI copilot grounded in customers’ business data and infused with AI agents to proactively assist employees in every cloud application they use – while automating complex processes.
With the 1H2025 release, SuccessFactors has introduced the Joule experience in its mobile app. This means employees can now interact with the entire enterprise suite using natural language directly from the SuccessFactors mobile app – whether they want to find information, complete a task, or navigate to the right location.
Joule supports three primary capabilities for HR scenarios: transactional, navigational, and informational.
In transactional scenarios, Joule not only retrieves data – it facilitates actions. For example, when a user says, “I want to request feedback from my manager,” Joule collects the necessary context and sends the request directly within the same conversational thread. In navigational cases, Joule acts as a smart shortcut, directing users to the appropriate screen inside the app. For instance, if you’re unsure where to assign team goals, Joule will generate a direct deep link to the right page. For informational scenarios, Joule queries its underlying documentation and knowledge base, then presents a concise summary along with related resources. Ask it about your company’s leave policy, and it will display a brief overview plus the top three relevant documents.
Joule in the SuccessFactors Mobile app isn’t limited to HR scenarios. Users can also query data from connected systems like SAP S/4HANA or Ariba – for example, to view open sales orders or pending purchase requests.
Joule can even be launched via Siri on iOS. Users can say, “Hey Siri, ask Joule in SuccessFactors…,” which opens the app and passes the query to Joule. Joule then processes and responds within the app – creating a seamless, hands-free experience.
With SuccessFactors’ capabilities rapidly expanding on the web, customers will now begin to see the same momentum in the mobile app. Joule’s integration empowers users on the go to access not only HR information but also broader SAP business content – bringing the power of one unified copilot across SAP systems into the SuccessFactors mobile experience.
One of the core goals was to unlock a best-in-class user experience. From the beginning, it was clear that users who had already onboarded to the SuccessFactors mobile app shouldn’t need to re-authenticate when accessing Joule. Achieving this required alignment across authentication models. While the mobile app previously used IDP activation protocols, Joule required IAS-based tokens.
These authentication changes were part of a much larger transformation across the SuccessFactors mobile architecture. In part two, we’ll explore how SAP Mobile Services and its SDKs enabled this journey – and what it means for the future.
