LLM as an additional translation provider
With generative AI bringing about new opportunities, we decided to explore Large Language Models (LLMs) as an additional translation provider to support in broadening our language scope and to improve our ability to handle content outside of the SAP domain.
Leveraging SAP’s generative AI hub, we created optimized translation prompts, evaluated them for translation quality, and hardened them against prompt injections.
We then integrated this new, LLM-based translation option as an additional translation provider in our Document Translation service for text and files translations, as well as in our Software Translation offering for file and Git projects, consumable via APIs or our user-friendly application.

Just like our machine translation provider, our LLM offering is secure and can be used even for confidential content. We also clearly inform users when they are consuming translations created by AI, explaining that there may be inaccuracies and the results should be verified before use.
How does it look for Document Translation?
On the Document Translation user interface, you can simply select LLM as the translation engine you wish to use for text or file translation:
The available source and target languages changes according to the chosen provider.
For Document Translation file translations, the translation engine that has been used is displayed on the UI for each file translated.
The translated files are available for up to 72 hours after translation was performed and can be downloaded, with a suffix added to the file name making it clear the file is a translation and including the source and target languages (example: filename_translated_en-US-pt-PT.pptx).
In the Document Translation application settings, you can also set LLM as your preferred translation engine and set your preferred source and target languages for each provider for file translation:
How does it look for Software Translation?
For Software Translation, LLM-based translation has been added as an additional provider for file and Git projects.
Simply select LLM as the translation engine when creating your file or git project, and you can choose your required source and target languages from the over 2,800 combinations available.
After configuring your Git or file project, you simply execute translation and on the Translations tab, the translation provider is displayed for each translated text.
As you can see, we provide a quality index of 25% for LLM-translated texts just as we do for SAP MT as a translation provider. This is because we strongly recommend that you check and, where necessary, correct or adjust the translations before they are used on your user interfaces.
Translators or reviewers who have been provided access to the project can review and make changes as required.
Once a translator or reviewer manually changes the text and saves their changes, the Translation Provider changes to Manual Translator for the relevant text and the user’s name and the date and time of change are visible in the application.
Can I change the translation provider for an existing software project?
Once you have selected your preferred translation engine for a Git or file Software Translation project and triggered translation, you cannot subsequently change the translation provider for the project. You can, however, add or remove languages and make other project configuration adjustments as required.

LLM-based translation support was added for the synchronous and asynchronous Document Translation APIs as well as for the file project and git project APIs for Software Translation.
When to use what: SAP Machine Translation or LLM-based Translation?
SAP Machine TranslationLLM-based Translation
“Speaks SAP fluently”: Trained on vast amounts of SAP data, SAP MT continues to provide the best results for SAP-related content.
Highly performant: Offers faster turnaround than LLM-based translation when translating large volumes and documents (PDF, PPTX, DOCX, XLSX).
Cost-effective: SAP MT is more cost-effective than LLM-based translation and should be used as first preference for all texts where it meets translation quality expectations.
More generic: Provides better translations for content outside the SAP domain where adherence to SAP terminology is not required/less important.
Additional languages or language combinations: Use for languages and language directions not supported by SAP MT.
Good for ‘noisy’ content – The LLM can often better handle content with source quality challenges such as typos, mixed language text, incomplete sentences (for example, chat conversation texts or blog comments).
