Govern Your RISE Project using CALM/ACTIVATE for Integration Suite, Edge Integration Cell

Estimated read time 6 min read

When implementing SAP Integration Suite, Edge Integration Cell in a RISE with SAP project, you’ll quickly realize there’s more to it than just following the installation steps.
Multiple teams are involved — Basis, Integration, Security — and the process spans several weeks with dependencies, approvals, and testing.

That’s where SAP Cloud ALM (CALM) and the SAP Activate methodology come in.
Instead of treating the setup guide as a static document, you can turn it into a living, governed project plan in CALM — giving you visibility, accountability, and structure.

In this blog, I’ll walk you through how we built a CALM project plan directly from the SAP Help guide:
Setting up and Managing Edge Integration Cell
… and aligned it with SAP Activate phases to ensure nothing slipped through the cracks.

Why Governance Matters for Edge Integration Cell

The Edge Integration Cell extends your Integration Suite into on-premise or private cloud environments, ideal for hybrid integration scenarios.
But without governance:

Prerequisite checks get missed.Network and security tasks are delayed. The “who does what” question slows progress.

Using CALM + Activate solves these issues:

Phased approach (Prepare → Explore → Realize → Deploy → Run)Task ownership and clear accountabilityBuilt-in dependencies and milestone tracking

Building the CALM Project Plan from the SAP Help Guide

The SAP Help guide breaks the setup into logical sections — installation prerequisites, network configuration, deployment, operations.
We mirrored this structure in CALM:

Each section became a Work Package. Each step in the guide became a Task, with an owner, due date, and link to the original help page.

The Edge Integration Cell setup as a governed CALM project — each work package represents a major setup step from SAP Help.

Detailed CALM task view — each task links directly to the relevant SAP Help step, ensuring consistent execution.

Example:

Work Package: Install Edge Integration CellTask: Prepare installation environment (linked to SAP Help section)Task: Run installation script on target hostTask: Validate installation logs

Using SAP Activate in CALM

Once the work packages were in place, we assigned them to Activate phases:

Prepare: Check system prerequisites, plan network connectivityExplore: Review architecture, finalize sizing & connectivity modelsRealize: Perform installation, apply configurationsDeploy: Prepare go-live, complete handover documentationRun: Set up monitoring, operational processes

Phase view in CALM shows the progression of the Edge Integration Cell setup across Activate stages.

Practical Tips for Making It Work

Through experience, these points made the biggest difference:

Assign clear task owners — CALM Personas ensure accountabilityUse dependencies — Ensure network setup tasks finish before installation begins.Link every CALM task to the exact SAP Help step — removes ambiguity.Review progress at each Activate phase gate — prevents issues from snowballing.

Conclusion

By combining CALM project planning with the SAP Activate methodology, you can transform the Edge Integration Cell setup from a static instruction list into a clear, collaborative, and governable project.

Whether you’re in a RISE project or a hybrid integration scenario, this approach ensures:

Everyone knows their tasks.Steps happen in the right order.Stakeholders can track progress in real-time.
