On the Ryukyu Islands of southwestern Japan, the larva of a click beetle that nests underground waits until a snail passes overhead. Then it snags the snail’s soft gelatinous body from below, dragging the gastropod to its death and leaving its shell to sit ghostly and vacant on the surface above.
It’s the first time an ambush hunting strategy has been observed in click beetles.
