Cane toads were brought into Australia in the 1930s in hopes that they would act as a form of pest control and eat beetles that were destroying sugar cane crops. But… the experiment backfired.
Within 20 years the cane toad was thriving as an invasive species and predators have been unable to stop its spread because of a toxin on its skin.
Even worse, it’s killing off a native species, the Northern Quoll, at alarming rates. Some estimates say the little animal could go extinct within 10 years if nothing is done.
Luckily, scientists have a plan…
