The rewiring of existing SAP Datasphere tenants to SAP Business Data Cloud has become available in 2025. Since then, I have been in many discussions with customers, partners, but also SAP colleagues at SAP TechEd in Berlin, Sydney and other events or meetings.
I observed that people unintentionally misinterpret the term “rewiring”. It sounds technical, hence there are associations with data, object or even full tenant migrations. This is not the case!
Let me use this blog to clarify what rewiring is, and what it is not. Moreover, give you some guidance on the steps which you need to take.
When do I need to rewire my existing SAP Datasphere tenant?
You have made a decision to sign up for SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) and to make use of your existing tenants for SAP Datasphere and / or SAP Analytics Cloud as part of your new landscape with SAP BDC.
If you have not made any decision on SAP BDC yet, you can certainly use your existing tenant(s) until the end of your current contract without SAP BDC. However, you will miss out on new capabilities offered by SAP BDC with SAP managed data products and the enhanced open partner ecosystem options.
What is tenant rewiring?
The term “rewiring” sounds quite technical. Therefore, there are immediate associations with data, object or even full tenant migrations. This is not the case!
The term rewiring mainly refers to a change of your commercial model from a stand-alone tenant to a tenant which is managed as part of a larger SAP BDC landscape.Rewiring helps you change the management of your tenant lifecycle to the SAP for Me portal.Prerequisites are that you commercially move the tenant on your same customer ID and your current data center being available also for Business Data Cloud. Please check on these two points! If these conditions are met a lot will stay the same. Meaning you stay on your existing hyperscaler and data center. Hence, your tenant and its URL will remain intact, just under a new commercial model, even without any downtime required.
What is tenant rewiring not?
Rewiring is therefore not a tenant migration as your existing tenant stays the same and is reused as part of an SAP BDC landscape.
Rewiring does not migrate your tenant between hyperscalers or data centers, as with the conditions mentioned before, your current data center – given that it is available for SAP BDC – will stay the same on your existing customer ID.
Rewiring does not migrate your data or any objects, as the full existing tenant is only commercially moved as described before.
Rewiring does not require any tenant downtime.
How can I initiate a tenant rewiring?
Before you can start to initiate the rewiring, you need to change the commercial model of your SAP Datasphere tenant to a Business Data Cloud contract – in short: a subscription to SAP Business Data Cloud must exist.
For tenants provisioned via BTP cockpit
After the commercial change, your SAP BTP administrator can initiate the tenant rewiring directly through the SAP BTP platform global account as a self-service. You control the timing of rewiring yourself, as you can trigger it via self-service.
Once the request is received, the process is initiated to update the tenant and move it to SAP Business Data Cloud. The tenant will be visible in SAP Business Data Cloud when the rewiring is completed.
For subscription tenants provisioned by SAP
After the commercial change, your subscription is moved from standalone to SAP Business Data Cloud. Be aware, that the SAP Business Data Cloud cockpit feature must be activated in your appropriate data center through SAP for Me portal prior to rewiring.
The rewiring itself is initiated as part of the subscription change request. That means, your tenant is automatically moved to SAP Business Data Cloud for the contract start date.
