At the bottom of the earth there’s a massive machine that’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen. That’s because it’s mostly buried under the ice and it’s not looking at the stars… It’s hunting ghosts!
Specifically, “ghost particles” known as neutrinos. These mysterious particles come from somewhere in space and are smaller than an electron.
We can only spot them when one accidentally bumps into an atom and that rarely happens so scientists around the world have built massive “telescopes” like this one to try and catch them as they pass – giving us a new way to map the universe.
