Most people can tell whether meat has turned rotten—the smell gives it away. But octopuses don’t have noses.
However, a 2025 study published in Cell revealed the animals can use a set of “taste” sensors on their sucker cups to avoid eating dangerous meals, just as humans reject an off-smelling dish. Specific molecules produced by bacteria in rotting food can activate these sucker sensors, causing octopuses to discard food or eggs that would make them or their offspring sick.
