You’ve probably heard that the FCC, in what passes for wisdom from Trump appointees, has decided to ban all foreign-made Wi-Fi routers in the US. So, basically, all routers. Which is true…but a lot more complicated than that.
Here’s what you need to know:
The router you’re using now is not suddenly illegal. Everything sold and operating in the US today still works.
It doesn’t mean that you’ll see empty shelves in the router section at Best Buy. Retailers can still sell old stock, and even import and sell new routers made overseas. So, what exactly is being banned?
The FCC will not certify new router models that aren’t made in the US. So brand new designs coming out won’t get tested and certified by the Federal Communications Commission unless they’re made in the US. That effectively means that no new routers designed after today will be cleared.
The FCC says that it’s doing this to enhance security, after a series of cyberattacks that used weaknesses in routers. Which is true, but again, there are essentially zero consumer-grade routers or home network equipment made in the US.
So blaming these attacks on specifically “foreign” routers is kind of like saying that not all pandas are evil bloodthirsty monsters, just the ones that come from China.
Exactly how this is going to shake out isn’t really clear. The FCC could create exceptions for this policy on individual basis, possibly for some (ahem) considerations. The FCC could also expand the current rules and totally ban the import of routers that were already approved. We’ll keep an eye on it over at PCWorld.
