Today is a day that ends in y, and that means that streaming video prices are going up. For the fifth time in the last five years, Netflix is raising its subscription rate: basic ad-supported goes up to $9 a month in the US, ad-free goes up to $20 a month, and 4K ad-free is $27 a month. It makes you nostalgic for the good old days of cable.
Of course Netflix really needs the extra money, since they’re buying Warner Bros. Oh wait, they’re not, they withdrew the bid to let Paramount swoop in, and got a $2.8 billion dollar payout for doing nothing. So I guess all the extra money is for, I dunno, putting more video games that no one asked for into your subscription.
New subscribers get the new prices, existing subscribers will see the charges on their next bill. When it comes to pissing off subscribers and driving people to cheaper alternatives, Netflix really knows how it’s done done done.
