If you’re old enough to remember a time before Minecraft, you
probably also remember Really Simple Syndication, RSS, and feed
aggregators like Google Reader. Reader is buried in the Google
Graveyard, but RSS is alive and well, and a great way to aggregate
feeds without bowing to a social media algorithm. AHEM please like
and subscribe.
There are services that will do this for you, but they’re generally either
paid or ad-supported. And you can do it in a browser like Chrome or
Vivaldi, but that has interface and syncing issues. A better way to go
might be to build your own RSS server and access it on whatever
device you’re using. Over on PCWorld Ben Patterson rolled his own
RSS server, using a Raspberry Pi and an open source program called
FreshRSS. No ads, no subscriptions, using the Google Reader API,
and accessible with just about any app you want.
Check out the full article to see how he did it, and get some alternative
options for software and hardware.
