Why was Meshtastic created? And what are the use cases for it?
Meshtastic is an open source, off-grid, decentralized messaging system. It uses low-power radio waves to create a private network. No need for cell towers, WiFi, or internet connectivity – and it’s already proving its worth for personal communications between people and for connected devices. Node can communicate over local, encrypted networks. This brings speed and privacy benefits, and removes the dependency on third-party networks.
In this talk, Jonathan Bennett, seasoned Meshtastic contributor and leader of the Meshtastic on native Linux project, takes us through this fascinating project.
About Jonathan Bennett
Jonathan started his first business by flashing the open source OpenWRT firmware on consumer routers, and installing them for small businesses upgrading from DSL. He took that experience working open source to the “FLOSS Weekly” podcast, which he co-hosted for years before taking over as the primary host in 2023 — he still hosts it to this day. During this time, he also covered the security beat for Hackaday, authoring the column “This Week in Security” from 2019 until 2025.
Jonathan has been a Meshtastic contributor since 2023. He now leads both the Meshtastic on native Linux project, as well as the cryptography team. He’s also serving as the CEO of Meshtastic Solutions, the company formed to provide commercial support for Meshtastic.
