NVIDIA released a new toolkit called BioNeMo Agent Toolkit that’s meant to let AI agents actually do hands-on scientific work in biology and chemistry – not just answer questions about it. Instead of an AI just chatting about a protein or a drug compound, it can now use real scientific software tools: predicting protein shapes, testing how well a drug molecule binds to a target, analyzing genetic sequencing data, and suggesting which lab experiments to try next.

Companies including Dassault Systèmes, Databricks, Eli Lilly, Schrödinger, Snowflake, and the University of Washington’s Institute for Protein Design are adopting it, and both Anthropic and OpenAI are integrating it into their systems. The idea is that a general AI chatbot is bad at knowing which specialized scientific tool to use for a given task – this toolkit hands it the right tools and know-how so it can work more like a research assistant.
