SAP API Management for Beginners – Part 1: What Is APIM & A Complete Features Tour

Part 1 of a 5-part beginner series on SAP API Management within SAP Integration Suite.

What this series covers

If you’ve ever built an integration in SAP CPI, you’ve dealt with APIs — OData services from S/4HANA, REST endpoints from third-party systems, SOAP interfaces from legacy backends. You call them, they respond, done.

But here’s the question nobody asks early enough: who else is calling those APIs?

The moment you expose an API to a partner, a mobile app, or an external developer, a whole new set of problems appears. Who’s calling? How often? Are they authenticated? Are they sending payloads that could crash your backend? And when the CEO asks “how many API calls did Partner X make last month?” — can you answer?

That’s the gap API Management fills. It sits between the consumer and your backend, giving you a single place to secure, monitor, throttle, and govern every API call — without touching the backend itself.

In this 5-part series, we’ll go from zero to a fully governed, production-ready API setup:

Part Topic 1 (this post)What is APIM, its use, and a complete features tour2Create your first API Proxy with the Northwind OData service3Verify API Key policy, Subscription, Debug, Versioning & Policy Templates4OAuth 2.0, KVM, traffic policies (Spike Arrest, Quota), Threat Protection & CORS5Advanced topics — routing, path removal, Developer Hub, Analytics & MCP Gateway

We’ll use the Northwind OData service (free, publicly available) for hands-on creation, so every reader can follow along without needing their own S/4HANA tenant. Where relevant, we’ll point out the differences when connecting to a real S/4HANA Public Cloud backend.
