Build your Reputation: Why Reputation Matters for Technical Professionals

Most technical professionals underestimate what reputation does for their career. Not the vague “personal brand” kind. The kind where people reach out to you before you reach out to them. Where you get invited to speak. Where your name carries weight in rooms you’re not physically in.

Most advice on building reputation sounds exhausting. Post every day. Grow your audience. None of that is realistic for someone with an actual job.

KP Sauer, product manager for SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Datasphere, started with zero online presence in 2021. No LinkedIn activity, barely any blogs, no video experience. He wasn’t trying to build a brand. He had a practical problem: bi-weekly product releases that were hard for customers to follow. So he started writing about them. Three years later, people at conferences ask him for selfies. Customers contact him directly to participate in workshops or when they’re confused about a product decision. He spends a few hours per week on it.

In this session, KP walks through the system he built without really planning to: four channels that reinforce each other, a rhythm that fits around a real workload, and the point where he noticed something had quietly shifted. You’ll leave with a concrete mental model and one first step you can take next Monday.
