State of the Postgres Extension Ecosystem

Video of a conference talk about the state of the Postgres extension ecosystem presented by David Wheeler at POSETTE: An Event for Postgres 2024. The last year has seen a resurgence of activity around Postgres extensions and their distribution. A number of new registries have emerged promising to make extensions easier to discover, learn, and install. The community has reacted to these developments with vigor, spinning up new projects and designs to refresh and improve the dormant services first developed a decade ago.

This talk will give a brief history and current of Postgres extension distribution, then outline the vision and projects aiming to build the extension ecosystem of the future. Whether you’re interested in learning about, using, developing, or distributing extensions, this talk will have something for you.

David is a long-time PostgreSQL contributor, and creator of Sqitch, a database change management system; PGXN, the PostgreSQL Extension Network; pgTAP, a database test framework, and CITEXT2, the case-insensitive data type. After stints with PostgreSQL Experts, iovation, and The New York Times, he now leads the extension ecosystem initiative for Tembo. He lives in New York City with his artist wife when they’re not exchanging homes overseas.
