Overview
This year, over 400 researchers, vendors, and practitioners from around the globe gathered in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the sixth International Conference on Process Mining (ICPM). Held from October 14th to 18th, 2024, the conference offered five days of diverse sessions, including research presentations and demonstrations, as well as an industry-focused track featuring vendor-led tutorials, use-case discussions, and a hackathon. With this duality, ICPM uniquely bridges academia and industry, making it an exciting event for the process mining community—and a key conference for SAP Signavio. In this blog post, discover how our colleagues represented SAP Signavio across various sessions, explore the hot topics highlighted at the conference, and celebrate our accomplishment in winning the Best Paper Award.
SAP Signavio at ICPM
SAP Signavio took an active role on both sides of the conference: research and industry. As a platinum sponsor, SAP Signavio’s booth served as a lively hub of discussion among colleagues, partners, and attendees. Gia-Thi Nguyen and Gregor Berg presented how SAP Signavio, LeanIX, and WalkMe support business transformation initiatives. Meanwhile, various colleagues from Signavio’s innovation unit, Signavio.NEXT, contributed research to the conference. Led by and in collaboration with Timotheus Kampik, the team—including master’s and PhD students, visiting researchers, and engineers—presented papers on numerous hot topics.
Hot Topics
ICPM featured a range of hot topics, with generative AI (GenAI) continuing to make waves in the field. However, one particularly prominent topic this year was simulation, generating even more buzz throughout the conference. ICPM is a forum for presenting both foundational research and the newest techniques in process mining, making it a stage also for the latest advancements in GenAI. The conference offered a new GenAI workshop to highlight the latest applications, with a main-track presentation from our Signavian Adrian Rebmann exploring the current capabilities of large language models (LLMs) in process mining. While GenAI was a key theme, simulation was the highlight, getting more and more traction in recent years. The main keynote provided a comprehensive overview of different simulation approaches, discussing both differences and commonalities among them. Additionally, several papers proposed new data-driven simulation algorithms.
Best Paper Award: AgentSimulator
One such simulation approach was developed in a research project by our Signavians Lukas Kirchdorfer, Robert Blümel, and Timotheus Kampik, in collaboration with professors Han van der Aa and Heiner Stuckenschmidt. We are incredibly proud to receive the ICPM Best Paper Award, highlighting the impact and recognition of SAP Signavio in the academic community. The paper introduces a novel approach for business process simulation using agent-based modeling. While traditional simulation approaches focus on the global control-flow perspective of the process, AgentSimulator models processes by simulating individual agents representing resources, each with unique characteristics and decision-making capabilities. The strength of this approach lies in its ability to better capture the complexity of real-world processes, especially those involving human participants, where variability and autonomy play significant roles. Therefore, it allows for potentially more realistic simulations, providing valuable insights into how processes change in different scenarios.
Conclusion
ICPM 2024 showcased several emerging trends transforming the process mining field. Topics ranged from agent-based simulation models to the use of GenAI for providing contextual explanations, offering a forward-looking perspective on how businesses can harness data to gain deeper insights and enhance their processes. For those interested in learning about the details of the latest process mining advancements, the full range of papers is publicly available.
