For modern enterprises, we know that harnessing the full potential of business data is essential to making smarter decisions and accelerating innovation. To truly deliver impact, AI agents must go beyond traditional automation – they need to plan and adapt execution based on real-time data and human input. To get the most accurate and relevant results, they need a deep understanding of your unique business data and processes.

That’s why we’re excited to announce the general availability of Joule Studio in SAP Build. With Joule Studio, developers can now start to tailor and extend SAP’s agentic AI to businesses, accelerate workflow automation, and unlock even greater value.

Joule Studio is the latest SAP Build capability where you can extend Joule’s out-of-the-box capabilities with company-specific skills and intelligent agents.

In case you missed it, see the announcement and overview of Joule Studio to understand the unique value it brings deep grounding in business processes & data, an open and extensible framework, and built-in Security & Compliance.

In this post, I’ll share more about what’s available today: custom Joule skills creation in Joule Studio, along with key capabilities, typical use case patterns, and resources for getting started. I’ll also share a sneak peek at what lies ahead with custom AI agents in Joule Studio and how they’ll continue to evolve to support even more complex, cross-system business scenarios.

What are Joule skills?

With today’s general availability release, it’s now possible to start expanding Joule’s capabilities using Joule Skills, built with skill builder in Joule Studio, to handle repetitive, rule-based tasks.

Joule skills are modular components within Joule. They leverage the contents of a conversation to complete a specific task.

Here’s a closer look at the key attributes of Joule Skills:

Deterministic execution: Joule Skills perform single, predefined operations. These operations can contain multiple steps, such as automations or messages. Each operation contains fixed inputs and outputs, ensuring consistent and efficient results.Natural language understanding: Joule interprets different ways a user might request an operation, ensuring the correct skill is triggered, regardless of phrasing.Context awareness: Joule analyzes user roles, conversation history, and business context to trigger skills only when relevant, avoiding unnecessary executions.Multiple skills working together: Joule Skills are published within a single productive Joule instance, seamlessly combining SAP-provided and custom skills for a unified automation experience.

Joule skills are modular and self-contained, meaning that organizations can start leveraging them to automate everyday tasks without having to add extra layers of complexity. With Joule Studio’s open and extensible framework, skills can be integrated with SAP apps, as well as third-party APIs through SAP Build actions, so they can carry out tasks across systems automatically without needing extra steps or human input.

Typical Use Case Patterns

Joule skills are ideal for handling common, low-complexity requests, freeing your team’s time up from routine tasks. Let’s take a look at some of the common use cases for creating custom Joule skills:

Navigation: Allow users to navigate seamlessly across company applications to find specific information, such as IT help resources and HR policies.Data access: Enable users to retrieve, monitor, and track data such as shipping info or optimized delivery routes with real-time traffic updates.System transactions: Structured workflows and system transactions — like IT ticket creation or order management — can be automated and executed via Joule.Workflow execution: Enable Joule to initiate workflow and collect user input for requirements, such as hiring approval processes, facility maintenance requests, or supplier contract renewals.Decision assistance: Enhance decision-making by providing pre-defined insights, such as credit risk evaluation, sales performance forecasting and warehouse demand predictions.

Of course, these only begin to cover the breadth of possibilities that Joule skills offer, as they’re deeply grounded in business data and processes. As part of SAP Build, Joule Studio has native access to all your connectors, automations, apps, and actions — enabling you to reuse assets, leverage shared APIs, and operate within a single governance framework. This tight integration eliminates duplication, accelerates delivery, and ensures consistency across your SAP Build environment. With Joule Studio’s intelligent understanding of existing automations and applications, the skills developers build are not only tailored to unique business needs but also drive real-world outcomes.

Several of our SAP Partners have already started to transform their everyday operations with Joule Studio and custom skills. To learn more about their use cases and experiences, check out their blog posts:

Get started creating custom Joule Skills

As we move closer to a more unified experience across SAP Build, the skill-building process is designed to feel intuitive and familiar. Joule Studio makes it easy to dive in and get started, with a setup that feels instantly familiar to anyone who’s used SAP Build.

The typical design process includes:

Creating a project in SAP Build: Directly from the SAP Build Lobby, initiate the skill development environment within Joule Studio.Defining metadata: Add the skill name and description to ensure discoverability, semantic clarity and intent-based Joule orchestration.Configuring inputs and outputs: Determine what Joule will request from the end user (inputs) and what it will return (outputs), enabling structured communication. Building the logic flow: Embed existing automation elements such as actions, decisions, and sub-processes with a familiar drag-and-drop simplicity.Test in the Test Environment: Test how newly created Joule Skill works within the Joule conversation. Ensure that it functions as expected and does not conflict with any other existing Joule Skills.Release and Deploy to Production: Make project available to end users by deploying it to the specified production environment.

Following SAP Build’s approach, Joule Studio enables both developers and business process experts to start creating. So, whether you’re an enterprise architect looking to extend Joule for your organization’s AI solutions, or a line of business expert hoping to simplify routine requests – Joule Studio now lets you create custom skills with drag-and-drop ease and maximum adaptability.

What’s Next: Pushing the boundaries with custom AI Agents

This is only the beginning for Joule Studio, as we’ll continue to evolve the capabilities further by introducing the agent builder in Joule Studio later this year. With custom AI agents, enterprises can unlock even more complex scenarios, bridging across multiple systems, steps, and tasks.

AI agents used for procurement scenariosHere’s a few examples of what would be possible with custom AI agents:

Procurement decision-making: Analyze supplier performance and market trends, helping procurement teams make informed decisions, negotiate better contracts, and ensure supply chain reliability.Talent acquisition: Streamline the recruitment process by reviewing candidates based on resumes, scheduling interviews, and assisting in onboarding (e.g. gathering docs), ensuring faster and efficient hiring.Logistics planning: Optimize delivery routes based on real-time traffic data, weather conditions, and carrier availability, enhancing efficiency and reducing transportation costs.
