How to get started with the RISE with SAP System Transition Workbench

Estimated read time 14 min read

Now a days, companies are actively exploring easier and more reliable methods to upgrade and migrate their systems to unlock the full value of SAP S/4HANA and cloud solutions.

Many organizations want a simplified and guided approach that reduces complexity during system transitions. Transition projects often involve multiple technical steps, tools, and dependencies that must be carefully managed.

The RISE with SAP System Transition Workbench helps safeguard transition projects by providing a single centralized entry point. It offers a highly automated and guided system transition procedure designed to streamline the entire process. The workbench combines all necessary technical activities and tools into one structured framework. This approach reduces manual effort and minimizes the risk of errors during system upgrades and migrations.

By integrating different SAP software logistics tools, the workbench simplifies the overall transition experience. As a result, customers can move to SAP S/4HANA and the cloud more efficiently while ensuring a smooth and reliable transformation journey.

What is the “RISE with SAP system transition workbench”?

The “RISE with SAP System Transition Workbench” is the single-entry point for your RISE journey.  The system transition workbench is provided for the purpose of streamlining and standardizing the transition paths to RISE. It is a combination of manual and automated step-by-step instructions organized in Cockpits to complete the process successfully. It brings together existing tooling as required for the selected transition approach. It helps with preparation and prerequisite activities, ensuring system readiness. It provides growing set of health and quality checks reflecting SAP Enterprise Cloud Services (ECS)’s standards for a smooth handover and reduced downtime.

Available Approaches
The RISE with SAP System Transition Workbench supports different ways for migrating systems. Each method comes with detailed documentation that explains the process. The documentation gives clear steps and guidance to handle specific migration needs.

How the “RISE with SAP System Transition Workbench” works
With RISE for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, operating system (OS) access is typically restricted. During the transition to RISE, a virtual machine is provided to perform some tasks which requires OS-level access. We call it a Migration Virtual Machine (VM). The Migration VM allows you to create a temporary system (intermediate System) and perform your chosen transition approach.

The “System Transition Workbench” runs on the Migration VM.

The System Transition Workbench automatically downloads the required Software Logistics (SL) tools from the Software Download Service (SDS).

It makes sure that the latest version of each tool is used and integrates them to work together during the process.

The “System Transition Workbench” stores all created and necessary secrets in a password vault. For more information, see Security Features.

During the preparation phase the “System Transition Workbench” requires an internet connection to install a temporary system (intermediate System) on the Migration VM.

The PAS (primary application server) instance cannot start since it is not connected to a database yet. It is required for the postprocessing steps; there it gets started and connected to the target database to perform the final checks. A direct connection is required between the source and target database.

Preparation activities on SAP ECS and customer side

Preparatory actions to be performed by SAP ECS

The SAP system transition workbench is installed by SAP ECS on a Migration VM. Once the Migration VM is ready, SAP ECS hands it over to the migration partner. Before installing the System Transition Workbench, the SAP Host Agent must be set up correctly with the right certificates. SAP ECS handles this setup.

Note: Scenarios in the Early Adopter Care program are by default not included on the Migration VM. If you are part of such an Early Adopter Care program, you must ask SAP ECS to enable it on the VM.

Actions to be performed by users

The workbench requires access to the Internet, preconfigured by the user’s proxy. Remote Function Call (RFC)

How to Access the “RISE with SAP System Transition Workbench” to Run Cockpits

Access the https://<Migration VM name>:1129/lmsl/slocon/docs/index.html with which you can use the same <Migration VM name> for several procedures. Authenticate using the sapadm administrator user of the SAP Host Agent.

Once you have logged in, you can see System Transition Workbench catalog with the available Cockpits.

To select the required Cockpit, choose the Create button and follow the instructions provided.

Advantages

Smooth, secure fast transition into a cloud model.  Safeguarded transition through step-by-step guidance covering all necessary steps, based on SAP best practices. Resilient transition through automation, reducing the risk of errors and allowing predictability of the execution. Ensured resulting system quality, measured via a growing set of health and quality checks relevant for all systems. Simplifies and clarifies migration approaches to SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition.

Usage Restriction:

Above mentioned scenario are permitted for SAP ECS internal operations as well as for qualified migration partners and SAP Services. Qualified migration partners must have earned at least the “Essential Level” designation for the  SAP Cloud ERP Private competency as visible in the SAP Partner Finder. SAP provides required automation tooling and configuration on the virtual machine for the time of migration. Any non-authorized software export of the automation tooling or its configuration is prohibited. Any usage beyond defined usage constraints is prohibited. The RISE with SAP System Transition Workbench assumes that the target system and component releases are under maintenance. Technical limitations and/or (general) restrictions might require additional preparation or an upgrade to newer releases of SAP S/4HANA related applications, add-ons, or other technical components. The RISE with SAP System Transition Workbench is currently not available for SAP National Security Services (SAP NS2) customers. Currently, the RISE with SAP System Transition Workbench does not support SAP HANA scale-out target systems. The System Conversion using 2.0 (DMOVE2S4) for SAP ECC system with MSSQL databases is currently not supported.
