So a lot of y’all are running Linx now, huh? According to the latest Steam user survey from March, Linux just passed more than 5 percent of Steam gamers for the very first time. And if you don’t think that’s fast, it’s more than doubled in the last year. Windows lost over four percent in the last month.

The biggest part of this equation is obviously the Steam Deck, and some other handhelds that can run Valve’s Linux-based SteamOS like the Legion Go S. But surprisingly, that’s not the be all and end all of the numbers. New and basically unlabelled versions of Linux have shot up the rankings, with “other” filling for an even bigger chunk, just over 25 percent.

Linux is going to be crucial to Valve’s push for the new Steam Machine, which is competing with gaming PCs and consoles at the same time. Assuming it ever actually comes out, of course — with the RAM supply issues it looks like it’s been pushed to later this year. But even without hardware considerations, it looks like Linux-based gaming is having a definite moment.
