As the patching process of an on-premises system fully relies on the customer’s responsibility, SAP Analytics Cloud customers get their updates automatically, multiple times a year via Quarterly Release Cycle (QRC).
There is an interplay between SAP Analytics Cloud and SAP BW, which means that some of the new feature enhancements require updates on the SAP BW system as well.
This blog gives you guidance on how to deal best with patching your SAP BW system when using SAP Analytics Cloud. Let’s break it down.
Prerequisites – Minimum Supported SAP BW version
The minimum supported SAP BW version (as of September 2024) is SAP BW 7.50.
In case your system is below that version, we strongly recommend upgrading your BW system to at least SAP BW 7.50 or BW/4HANA (to the highest SP available) as soon as possible to ensure smooth integration and take full advantage of SAP Analytics Cloud features.
SAP Notes and SAP BW Note Analyzer
The smallest element in the patching process is an SAP Note. SAP Notes are essential tools for various tasks:
Code Corrections: Fix minor issues in the system Enhancements: Enable new features, such as those in SAP Analytics Cloud Documentation: Provide information and guidelines
SAP notes can be bundled and consumed via SAP Note Analyzer. You can find more information on how to use it here or within the user guide.
Question: When do I need to run the SAP Note Analyzer?
Answer: Before each SAP Analytics Cloud QRC update
The latest .xml file has been thoroughly tested with SAP Analytics Cloud QRC updates to address bugs proactively and it includes fixes for all known issues. To stay informed about new .xml versions, you can subscribe to SAP Note 2541557. This way, you’ll get notified whenever an updated version is available.
Once the updated .xml file is available, you can apply it to your SAP BW system immediately. Make sure to do this no later than the next QRC of SAP Analytics Cloud. You can find more information in the harmonized release calendar for SAP Cloud products, SAP note 2888562.
If several SNOTE corrections are required (a SAP Analytics Cloud feature can require multiple SAP BW Notes) and are available in the latest Support Package (SP), consider upgrading to the latest SP.
We recommend planning a SP upgrade once a year. This helps to keep the number of notes needed for each QRC release manageable. For example, the difference between QRC2 2024 and QRC3 2024 is roughly 11 notes, which need to be applied quarterly anyways.
