It’s been barely a fortnight since the XTR M9200 groupset landed, and already we have the follow-up act; Shimano XT M8200.

This is most excellent news. We came away impressed with the shift quality and overall toughness of XTR Di2, but with the drivetrain costing over three grand on its own, it undoubtedly sits at the premium end of the spectrum.

As predicted, Shimano has begun trickling many of those same technologies down to a cheaper price point. How much cheaper? A complete XT Di2 drivetrain will cost nearly 40% less than XTR. That makes it more accessible, and in our opinion, an even more important addition in Shimano’s quest to catch up with SRAM.

We’ll point out that it isn’t just about the drivetrain. Shimano is also rolling out new 2-piston and 4-piston XT brakes, as well as a burly alloy wheelset, making this a significant launch all-round. Of course it’s exciting news anytime we see a new XT groupset, which has a storied history that dates all the way back to 1982. As Shimano’s first ever groupset built specifically for mountain biking, XT has long been known as the workhorse of the Japanese brand’s range. It’s undergone quite the evolution over the past four decades, and that is none the more apparent when looking at the snazzy new M8200 components.

We’ve been fortunate to have been riding a groupset over the past couple of weeks, and here we’ll be discussing the differences between XT and XTR, how the new XT Di2 drivetrain performs on the trail, and what it means for the ongoing component war between Shimano and SRAM.
