Introduction
In the world of process automation and monitoring, visibility is power—but actionability is the real game-changer. That’s why SAP Process Visibility offers a powerful feature that lets you go beyond viewing process steps to actually interacting with them: Step Navigation Links.
With just one click, users can jump directly from a step in the Process Workspace to the relevant task in the source application [Eg., My Inbox, SAP Task Center etc.,] streamlining issue resolution, approvals, and decision-making.
Let’s explore how easy it is to set this up.
What Are Step Navigation Links?
Step navigation links allow you to embed deep links in specific steps of a process path so users can quickly navigate to external apps like My Inbox, SAP Task Center, or any custom application to take action or see more details.
This bridges the gap between process monitoring and process execution.
Real-World Example
Imagine you’re tracking a Capital Expenditure Approval process in SAP Process Visibility. One of the steps is a pending task that a manager needs to approve in My Inbox.
With Step Navigation Links, you can:
Display a clickable link right on the process step in the Process Path view.Direct users to the exact task instance in ‘My Inbox’.Eliminate the need for users to search manually or switch between systems.
How to Configure Step Navigation Links
A quick step-by-step guide to configure step navigation links in your visibility scenario can be found in our SAP Help Documentation : Configure Step Navigation Links.
Example: Deep Linking to My Inbox
Steps:
In the visibility scenario editor, navigate to the Processes tab and choose the SAP Build Process Automation process for which you want to configure step navigation link.Under Steps and Events section, select the required step from the list and choose “Edit”.
In the Edit Step dialog box, navigate to the Link tab, and enable the Enable Link Configurations toggle button to configure the navigation link and update the Event, Path and Link Text as shown in the below example.
Here’s a practical example of how to create a dynamic link:
Copy the Original URL from ‘My Inbox’:
In the copied URL, replace the InstanceID with {stepInstanceId}, which will be dynamically retrieved from Process Visibility
Final URL:
This ensures that the link dynamically pulls the correct step instance ID when viewed in Process Visibility.
Why This Matters
Step Navigation Links bring real-time actionability to your process monitoring tools. Instead of just seeing that something is pending, users can click directly into the task, speeding up response times and improving collaboration across teams.
They’re especially valuable in scenarios like:
Procurement ApprovalsHR Workflows(Or) Any custom business process.
Final Thoughts
Configuring Step Navigation Links in SAP Process Visibility enables a dynamic, interactive experience. Whether you’re managing tasks in My Inbox, SAP Task Center, or custom apps, these deep links let you act without leaving your process dashboard.
It’s a small setup with big impact—boosting productivity, responsiveness, and user satisfaction.
