Tropical forests already cover some of the hottest parts of our planet, and these areas are only expected to get warmer. We know from temperate forests that heat can damage critical processes of individual trees and threaten landscape-scale survival, but how do plants already adapted to high temperatures respond? Staff writer Erik Stokstad explains how experiments from the boiling river of Peru to the indoor rainforest of Biosphere 2 in Arizona are helping scientists understanding different facets of how tropical plants will respond to a warming planet.
