Every tumor contains multitudes: A variety of cancerous and noncancerous cells—including immune cells and supportive stromal cells— contribute to the structural complexity of tumors, and therefore to variation in how different tumors respond to therapies.

In a suite of 12 Nature Portfolio papers, researchers with the Human Tumor Atlas Network presented in 2024 detailed “maps” of several different cancers, including breast, colorectal, pancreas, kidney, uterine, and bile duct cancers. The maps allow scientists to visualize information they could only infer before, the team said. The hope is they’ll allow researchers an unprecedented look at the inner workings of tumors, to better understand how they form and grow and how best to thwart them.
