The Santa Cruz Tallboy debuted in 2009 as the very first full suspension 29er from the Californian-based brand. It was a light and peppy XC bike for most of its life, until the Blur came along to assert its role as the competitive racer. That saw the Tallboy shift gears in 2019, with the fourth-generation model adopting the lower-link VPP platform that allowed it to morph into what Santa Cruz coined as the “downhiller’s XC bike”.
The Tallboy 4 and 5 have earned plenty of fans over the years, especially with riders who have been looking for something more substantial than a typical flex-stay XC whippet. However, as with a lot of modern trail and All Mountain bikes on the market, the Tallboy had gotten considerably porkier over time. The frame beefed up a lot, and the increased capability led to complete builds wearing heavier and heavier components.
For the new sixth-generation Tallboy, Santa Cruz decided it was time to bring the weight back down. It wanted to retain the descending chops of the previous bike, while perking things up to create a more well-rounded trail companion.
To achieve that, the Tallboy has undergone quite the makeover. This involved ditching the iconic VPP suspension design, which has clearly upset some of the die-hard fans.
What does that mean on the trail? And how exactly does the new Tallboy 6 stack up against the competition?
Wil’s been spending some quality time aboard our test bike over the past couple of months and is ready to deliver his verdict.
